In another action under Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s zero-tolerance policy against corruption, the Vigilance Bureau (VB) has apprehended a private person while he was accepting a bribe of ₹20,000 on behalf of a government clerk.

The arrested accused has been identified as Rajat Sharma, a resident of Basant Nagar, Partap Singh Wala in Ludhiana. He was caught red-handed by a VB team while receiving the bribe money from a complainant.

A VB spokesperson informed that the trap was laid after a Ludhiana resident lodged a complaint on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line. The complainant alleged that Amaninder Singh, Clerk posted in Tehsil East of the DC Office, Ludhiana, had demanded a total of ₹50,000 as bribe for providing information related to the registration of a plot within the jurisdiction of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation.

Following verification, the VB team organized a raid in the presence of two official witnesses, during which Rajat Sharma was nabbed while collecting part-payment of ₹20,000 from the complainant. On interrogation, Sharma disclosed that he was working unofficially with the clerk and had been instructed to collect the money on his behalf.

The Vigilance Bureau has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against both Rajat Sharma and clerk Amaninder Singh at VB Police Station, Ludhiana Range. Officials said further investigation is underway and efforts are being made to arrest the main accused soon.
