In a rare and meticulously executed “reverse trap” operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended two private individuals who attempted to bribe a Superintendent from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) Kolkata Division.
According to CBI statement, the officer was in the middle of an inquiry into suspected tax evasion by several online companies when he was approached with an offer of Rs. 22 lakh to provide undue favours. Demonstrating exemplary integrity, the officer immediately filed a formal complaint with the CBI rather than succumbing to the pressure.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI devised a reverse trap to catch the perpetrators red-handed. The operation concluded with the successful arrest of the two accused as they handed over the bribe to the officer.
Subsequent searches were carried out at multiple premises linked to the accused, with investigators expecting to uncover additional evidence not only about the bribery attempt but also the larger tax evasion network under probe.
